LENA AND THE WITCH
Catnip was ripped. Basil was snipped. Stinkhorn ran wild in
the garden.
“Perfect,” said Lena. “I’ll be a witch for Halloween.”
She lit a wick and candlelight flickered, winking on trout
lily, trillium, and teaberry,
flashing at owl-hoot and fox-scream,
quivering at moth-flutter, deer-snort, and wind-whisper—
beaming on the trail of bootprints.
As mugwort and tinder conk smoldered, candlelight flickered,
dancing on dead leaves and stink weed,
falling on kudzu that smothered a hut.
Then…door-creak. Eyes peek. Feet sneak inside.
A crow guarded boots, cape, and hat while Lena hatched a greedy plan.
“I’m going to be wicked chic.”
“No-no. Mustn’t take,” cawed the crow. “But stay. I insist. Don’t resist. Take a cup of basil-catnip tea.”
Lena snoozed as the witch shed black feathers and chanted a magical spell:
"Eye of newt. Fairy flute. Jaws of whale.
Grow claws, a tabby coat, and a tail.”
Candlelight flickered, glinting off bat flower, elf cap, and dragon’s breath,
glowing on night-hoppers, vine-creepers, and fur-clingers. It gleamed upon the garden,
glistening on stinkhorn, basil, and catnip.
“Happy Halloween,” said the witch.
“Likewise,” said Lena. And she snuffed out the wick with her paw.

I love the ingredients for the brew/tea and the twist at the end.
This is lovely. I wasn't expecting the ending. Nice.
